International Student Job Fair: Learn the job requirements and details of the trade by speaking directly with company representatives

In Kyoto, organizations like the Kyoto Prefectural International Center, and the Kyoto City International Foundation put on a number of job fairs for international students hoping to work in Japan to meet with companies. The companies at these fairs include Kyoto companies expanding overseas, travel companies serving tourists from overseas, hotels, and more.

Each year, many international students go to work at companies they’ve connected with at such job fairs, and continue to work in Kyoto today! Study Kyoto spoke with S.D, an Indonesian student at Kyoto Institute of Culture and Language, about finding a job at one such fair.

Q1: What kind of company are you going to join?
S.D: I’ll be entering a kimono rental company in April. I’ll be doing translation, interpretation, and I’ll be in charge of sales in Indonesia.

Q2: How were you conducting your job search?
S.D: I searched online for information about actually going to interviews, and that led me to participate in one of KyoTomorrow Academy’s events.

Q3: What was the most difficult part of the job search for you?
S.D: For me, it was interviews and writing my “self-promotion” piece (Jiko PR). They’re different than in other countries, so I was a bit worried about them.

Q4: What was the best part about participating in an international student job fair?
S.D: The fair is specifically targeted towards international students, so all of the companies already come knowing that we’re not Japanese. Because of that, they didn’t make such a big deal about small mistakes, and I felt more secure about trying to sell my strong points.
