Living in Kyoto! Kyoto Housing Search Made Easy

How can I rent a room in Japan? Moving abroad can be tricky—and there can be many new and unfamiliar rules to follow and boxes to check. This is often all the more true of students, for whom study abroad can be your first time living alone. On top of this, the Japanese rent system can be a little complicated…what is key money? A guarantor? Thank you money? While these are standard practice in much of Japan, they’re fees that are unfamiliar in many countries.
Don’t worry, though. Kyoto has a support service just for international students looking for a cozy place of their own!

Kyoto Housing Search for International Students

The International Student Study Kyoto Network has put together this service in order to help relieve some of the difficulties faced by Kyoto students in searching for housing. The website is available in Japanese, English, Korean, and Traditional and Simplified Chinese. The International Student Study Kyoto Network has put together this service in order to help relieve some of the difficulties faced by Kyoto students in searching for housing. Not only in Kyoto, but in many parts of Japan, there are unfortunately some restrictions placed upon international students seeking to rent. The listings on the housing search site above, however, are all posted with permission by their landlords with the intent to welcome foreign students, so you can search without worry.

The Kyoto Housing Search provides a simple flow from search to receiving the key to your room.

There is also information about the documents you’ll need to complete your room contract, instructions on how to separate trash in your neighborhood, and the particulars on your apartment’s water, gas, and internet.

Other Useful Functions

Particularly if this is your first time in Kyoto, there can be a lot to take in. Many students take qualifying exams for study abroad in their home countries, and only set foot in the city once they’ve arrived in Japan, and their adventure is set to begin. If you’re one of these students, a map may not be much use to you when searching for a room—you may not know quite what you’re looking at in a city you’ve never visited.
